North Georgia has permission to go to his home and there
remain undisturbed.

John Payne was
surrendered with the Georgia Militia to Federal forces at
Kingston Georgia on May 12, 1865. John Payne of Union
County, Georgia enlisted in Smith's Legion / 6th Georgia
Volunteer Calvary Regiment. He returned to Georgia on sick
furlough. John Payne was a soldier in Ledford’s
Cavalry Regiment at the time of his surrender. The regiment
was commanded by Colonel Benjamin M. Ledford
formerly of
the 6th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
