John Payne was surrendered with the Georgia Militia to Federal forces at Kingston Georgia on May 12, 1865. John Payne of Union County, Georgia enlisted in Smith's Legion / 6th Georgia Volunteer Calvary Regiment. He returned to Georgia on sick furlough. John Payne was a soldier in Ledford’s Cavalry Regiment at the time of his surrender. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Benjamin M. Ledford formerly of the 6th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
